If you align yourself on one of the vertical lines, you have a lot of negative space next to you to overlay graphics, text, or images related to whatever you’re talking about (represented by the smiley face). Again, try to align your graphics on one of the vertices too.
Those are the basics of framing. Remember that simple is sometimes better.
Lighting
So lighting goes along with your camera work, because without lighting, nothing would show up at all! Now, in film, lighting is crucial in creating an emotional feel in your story. A high shadow, harsh contrast view on a face portrays intensity and fear. A nice, soft, glowing light placed behind a subject/actor gives us a sense of beauty and goodness – like an angel with a halo. For standard vlogging, though, the best way to light your picture would be with three point lighting.
Three point lighting is exactly that – lighting from three positions. The three lights are called the key light, the fill light, and the back light. The key light is what provides the main source of light for your subject (in vlogs, you). It’s usually positioned to the right or left of the subject, directly in front of them. The fill light is on the opposite side of the key light, and serves the purpose of filling in the shadows, just as the name implies. Finally, there is the back light, which is placed behind the subject, and gives some “pop” to the image. It’s not very bright and can sometimes be unnoticed by most audiences, but it does give a bit of depth and dimension to a shot. Here’s a quick diagram I just drew up to illustrate. Quick note: I’m a filmmaker and a writer, not a… diagram artist. So go easy on me.
